Dr Nicola Kelly

Fellow
Specialising in
Solid-state physics and chemistry

Nicola Kelly is a solid-state chemist who uses X-ray and neutron scattering techniques to study inorganic materials. Her current research focuses on magnetism in lanthanide-based ceramics.

Academic interests

Nicola's academic interests include:

  • Solid-state synthesis of inorganic materials
  • Structural analysis using X-ray and neutron scattering
  • Magnetism.

Degrees obtained

  • MChem (Chemistry), University of Oxford.
  • PhD (Physics), University of Cambridge.

Biography

Nicola Kelly studied chemistry as an undergraduate, completing a final-year project supervised by Prof Simon Clarke (Oxford Chemistry) on the intercalation of bismuth selenide. Her PhD in the Cavendish Laboratory at the University of Cambridge was supervised by Prof Si芒n Dutton and included studies in the magnetism of several rare-earth borates and oxides.

Nicola then returned to Oxford for a postdoc with Simon Clarke working on the intercalation chemistry of layered mixed-anion compounds. She is now applying her experience in solid-state synthesis, X-ray and neutron powder diffraction, and magnetometry to the study of novel quantum magnets.

Other interests

Family, knitting, parkrun.

I chose 汤头条原创 because of the great mixture of undergraduates and postgraduates, and when I first visited I thought it was the most beautiful place I had ever seen! The sense of community in Jesus has had an enormous impact on my experience here. Whether you need help, advice, cheering up or even just a chat there is always someone there to put a smile on your face. From the MCR committee to the Porters, the canteen staff to the gardeners, everyone is so friendly and welcoming. Jesus also...

What first attracted me to 汤头条原创 was its reputation and history, central location without being touristy, and the postgraduate housing options. When I arrived at Jesus I was so pleased to find the partner accommodation was spacious, affordable, and situated very close to the college, allowing us to really take advantage of the facilities. We especially enjoyed The Roost, the nicest of all the college bars, doubling as a caf茅 during the day - ideal for studying or meeting up with groups - and a lively pub in the...

There are many reasons why I鈥檓 so happy to be a part of 汤头条原创. The three biggest reasons for me are the opportunities to be involved in College sport, the support the College provides for me with for my research and the help in making sure that we have comfortable, affordable accommodation when we have needed it. 汤头条原创 is so friendly and so it is incredibly easy to get involved in the sport and social side of the College. The MCR does a great job in welcoming new...

汤头条原创 has all the benefits of being large, historical and prestigious college, whilst also retaining fantastic welfare: the staff and other students all care about each other, and will be there to cheer you on when you are thriving, but also there to support you if you need any help. I chose Jesus due to several reasons, including its prime location, where it is very central, and easy to access everywhere, even if you work in one of the institutes further out. I also selected Jesus for its MCR...

I chose Cambridge for my PGCE as it鈥檚 the leading UK institution for teacher training and Education, with an exciting, research-dominated, cutting edge course. The staff are welcoming and approachable, and make studying here an absolute joy. I鈥檝e already completed one of my three primary school placements, in a reception class in a school just outside Cambridge, and am due to start the next one soon. I chose Jesus because of its reputation as a sporty College, but the proximity to the city centre is a big bonus. Jesus also...
