Communities in space: a one-day conference

On Friday 29th April, this one-day conference investigated the social, economic, cultural, legal, governmental, and other issues relating to future human space activities.

2021 marked the take-off of what some have called the ‘billionaire space race’. We are witnessing increasing involvement of private individuals in human spaceflight. Some are even exploring basing their ventures in space and building offices in orbit.

From the current development of space tourism to future human ventures, employment, and settlement, many issues need to be explored beyond the engineering and technical challenges posed by the harsh space environment.

Intellectual Forum Senior Research Associate Dr Ricky Lee brought together a collection of distinguished speakers to consider some of the implications of private and commercial human activities in space and explore how societies may build and grow off-planet.
