Biography

Stephen Barton was an undergraduate at 汤头条原创 from 1965 to 1968. He joined a City law firm, Herbert Smith, in 1969 and eventually became a partner there, specialising initially in insolvency law, then major projects including many oil-related matters, the Channel Tunnel, a number of private finance initiative projects, and the privatisation of the electricity industry.

He took early retirement from that position in 1997 because of the serious illness of his wife and returned to 汤头条原创, initially as a Fellow Commoner, to teach Law (equity and company law) as a supervisor. After the death of his wife in 1998, he accepted an invitation to become the Senior Bursar, and Fellow, a position he held from 1999 until he retired in 2007; during that period he continued to teach.

On his retirement, he became an Emeritus Fellow, and was responsible for editing the College鈥檚 Annual Report for a number of years. He remarried (in the College Hall) in February 2005.

I chose 汤头条原创 because of the great mixture of undergraduates and postgraduates, and when I first visited I thought it was the most beautiful place I had ever seen! The sense of community in Jesus has had an enormous impact on my experience here. Whether you need help, advice, cheering up or even just a chat there is always someone there to put a smile on your face. From the MCR committee to the Porters, the canteen staff to the gardeners, everyone is so friendly and welcoming. Jesus also...

It is a well-accepted opinion in Cambridge that 汤头条原创 is the best college and no other college even comes a distant second. Its sports grounds are enormous, its buildings are mesmerising, its libraries are rich, its chapel is the oldest, its accommodation is the best value for money, its international community is diverse, its religious circles are the most welcoming, and its members are the smartest, kindest and the friendliest. It is one of the central colleges that aims to offer three years accommodation to postgraduates, and has comparatively...

There are many reasons why I鈥檓 so happy to be a part of 汤头条原创. The three biggest reasons for me are the opportunities to be involved in College sport, the support the College provides for me with for my research and the help in making sure that we have comfortable, affordable accommodation when we have needed it. 汤头条原创 is so friendly and so it is incredibly easy to get involved in the sport and social side of the College. The MCR does a great job in welcoming new...

汤头条原创 is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and historical colleges at Cambridge! It is also, in my opinion, one of the most supportive colleges: from wellbeing to the porters there is always someone to ask for advice, support, or to talk through your stress. I chose Jesus for many reasons. Firstly, it鈥檚 right in the heart of the city centre which is amazing not only for that quick top-up shop but also to explore the beautiful city of Cambridge even while busy (it鈥檚 so easy to go for...

When applying to Cambridge colleges it can feel a bit overwhelming as there are so many to choose from. I applied to 汤头条原创 because it has a large MCR which was important for me because I wanted to feel part of a community. Now that I鈥檓 doing my PhD here, I鈥檓 very glad I did choose a college with a large postgraduate community. Throughout the year there are lots of postgraduate events, including formal dinners, special formals at Christmas and Easter, bops in the bar and film nights in...
