Marjorie Welish: Grating, Gradient, and Then Some

Grating, Gradient, and Then Some featured paintings and works on paper by the acclaimed American artist, critic, and poet Marjorie Welish between 27 April – 7 July 2024. 

The exhibition explored visual phenomena, such as striking patterns of alternating colours, and the message this conveys to the viewer. The exhibition features Welish’s diagrammatic works such as Indecidability of the Sign: Yellow/Black, an ongoing series of paintings begun in 2019.

Marjorie Welish received her first solo show thanks to Laurie Anderson, then curator of the Whitney Museum Art Resources Center. She has exhibited throughout the USA and Europe. Her work is in the collections of the Beinecke Library at Yale, British Museum, Columbia University, the Getty Center, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.  Writing on her work may be found in Of the Diagram: The Work of Marjorie Welish (Slought Foundation), and her collection of art criticism is Signifying Art: Essays on Art after 1960 (Cambridge University Press). Welish is a member of the board of the International Studio and Curatorial Programme and writes art criticism for Art Monthly.

The exhibition was curated by Dr Jonathan Tenney, Professor Rod Mengham and Laura Dennis, and supported by Emanuel von Baeyer, London.
