John Gibbons: Sculpture/Transmissions

Sculpture/Transmissions showcased recent work of the London-based Irish artist John Gibbons between 14 October – 23 November 2017.

Gibbon’s distinctive steelwork sculpture returned to Jesus after its inclusion in the 2005 and 2007 editions of Sculpture in the Close, combined with his recent abstract works on paper. Gibbons’ physically powerful forms contrasted with the display in Lent term 2018 of Vicken Parsons’ small-scale and deeply meditative paintings in Pool

John Gibbons is one of Britain’s leading sculptors, known for his large abstract steel sculpture. He was born in Ireland and attended Limerick School of Art, 1969–70, then St Martin’s School of Art, 1972–6. He gained many awards during his over 30-year career and was elected a fellow of the RBS in 2003. His work has been exhibited in numerous group and solo shows beginning with the International Arts Centre, London in 1975 and including the Serpentine Gallery, London in 1986; Madeline Carter Fine Art in Boston, America, 1988 and the National Portrait Gallery, London, 2009-2010.
