Art and Language: Now They Are
Now They Are was a show from conceptual art group Art & Language between 23 June – 09 August 2021.
Art & Language are one of the most established artistic cooperatives, active since 1968 and nominated for the Turner Prize in 1986. Their practice is organised around a central core of collaborative activity, resisting the traditional value attached to single artistic contributions.
The show’s centrepiece was a version of Art & Language’s major new work, ‘Picasso’s Guernica in the Style of Jackson Pollock’. In this piece, the drama of Picasso’s work is disguised as a Pollock-like painting, drawn on Teslin synthetic paper printed with essays written by the artists.
The considerable achievement of running such a significant show at the College was thanks to curator Dr Rod Mengham.
